(SaigonTimes) - Building a "happy company" shall aim to promote the team spirit, the creativity of each individual in the company, connect all the departments together towards the common goal. But how to achieve it?
On a typical weekend morning at a café - the meeting place of the businessmen of HCMC Young Businessmen Association (YBA), Mr. Le Ba Thong, CEO of TTT Trading and Construction Joint-Stock Corporation was sitting and singing with a guitar. Having just finished the beginning of the song Legend of Mother (Huyen thoai me), he suddenly moved the lyrics.
With the same rhythm, but the lyrics were "varied" to become more fun. The applause from the audience had not promptly ceased, the CEO of TTT opened his talk: "Dear brothers and sisters, in order to set up a happy company, we ourselves must be happy first ...".
According to Mr. Thong, building a happy company means “working hard and playing hard", there is no model to deploy a happy company. The "games" TTT plays are wires that helps connect all the members, make them be sociable and cooperative for the goal of the company. All the official events and internal events of the company are variations of a game. These games simply mean "the company must be filled with laughters."
The birthday of the company, an employee's wedding ... all are written as a complete script to develop into a game. "These events will mix the staffs in other departments together, so that they know each other and work together better," Mr. Thong says.
Even a tense meeting of the company is also held like a game. Before the meeting, each of all the staff will be given a shirt, on which is printed an acronym. At the end of the meeting, the task of each member assigned by the management corresponds with the acronym on the shirt.
"Whether playing a game, each employee must always be reminded to complete their work through this way," Mr. Thong says. These games of TTT are ... on purpose. For example, the company's goal in 2010 is to complete the work on schedule, in a timely manner to their partners with respect to the delivery time. All events and games of the company in 2010 are integrated with this goal in order to remind all the staff members. Due to the nature of the industry, the company's projects must go through all the departments. And after each game, as Mr. Thong says, "the project has run through all the departments without any obstacle."
All the games have the process of error checking in the system which timely navigates the games into the orbit already planned by the company. "Playing but achieving sales; the growth rate this year must be higher than that of last year; jobs must be completed. That's how we play", Mr. Thong says. The reward for an employee "works hard and plays hard" is equal to that for a salesman with the best sales of TTT. And more importantly, in each game, the leader must "manage his emotion” and must not mix public and private issues together, which affects the work.
To do this, each member participating in the game must be sincere and as the CEO of TTT says, "players must be unaffected and disinterested, playing for the purpose of building a better working environment for the company" . He says many foreign companies have drawn TTT senior human resources to work for them, but they do not reach their goal because these people cannot "forsake the game" after 18 years of having a strong attachment to TTT.

Finally the company has a pretty interesting decision: let the officials and employees decide the division of this bonus. The result is quite satisfactory, 50% of the bonus for the board, the executives, the senior officials of the company and 50% for the employees. "There cannot be a joyful company if employees do not receive the value they have devoted to the company and these values are not recognized by the company leaders," Mr. Khoi says.
